The Surgical Services Manager directs and organizes the activities of the Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Recovery Room, Ambulatory Day Surgery, Endoscopy Services, and Sterile Processing Services. Manager will collaborate and coordinate care with all surgical staff and the medical directors of surgery and providers. The major purpose of this position is to ensure a safe, evidence-based, efficient and quality-driven provision of comprehensive surgical services offered by South Peninsula Hospital. Provide clinical expertise and leadership to a specialty team of nurses, techs and support staff through rounding, direct care, and oversight in team’s daily and on-call practices in the Surgical Services arena. Model, evaluate, and establish excellence in the Surgical Services department and collaborate with all other departments and services to assure optimal patient care experiences and communication via patient pre-op instructions, pre/post nursing care reports, and post-care calls. The Manager will assist the senior leadership team in assessing and analyzing the feasibility of new services, treatments, technologies, required resources, cost-benefit analyses and program concepts. Will work to develop an annual budget, conduct monthly assessment and gap analyses, and strategies to optimize the efficiency and productivity targets of surgical services, work practice/hours and referral patterns. This position directly supervises a staff which includes registered nurses, scrub techs, unit clerks, and sterile processing techs. Staffing levels and schedules are determined by surgical case levels. A competent level of patient care will be consistently demonstrated while assuring and managing best team practices.
NATURE AND SCOPE: The position of the Surgical Services Manager is a ‘working manager’ position. The individual in this position understands and supports the overall mission, vision, and strategic goals of SPH and coordinates the activities of the department to assist in accomplishing those goals. This individual must be self-directed and willing to accept the responsibility of assuring/providing optimal clinical care, leading and developing the department and creating a healthy work environment with engaged team members. Responsible for creation, revision, and the implementation of departmental and house-wide policies and procedures, while maintaining and improving the levels of surgical care, emergency management responses, and environmental control in accordance with state and federal regulations. The manager will assure that only authorized physicians and nurse anesthetists perform procedures within the facility in accordance with established credentialing procedures. The Surgical Services Manager reports to the Chief Nursing Officer.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: The position of Surgical Services Manager requires a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Alaska. A minimum of 5 years of experience in an OR setting as a manager is required. B.S.N. required and CNOR preferred. Must have and maintain current certification in BLS and ACLS. Ability to assist in patient care as scrub, circulator, or PACU highly preferred. Speaking, listening and writing skills are required to communicate with professional staff, to direct the work activity within the department, and to communicate with personnel at all levels. Ability to prepare, analyze, and present timely, concise reports and recommendations to team and senior leadership regarding operations, budgets, and improvement targets that aids in communication and decision-making with those impacted. (i.e. first case start times, scheduling, OT, turnover times, QI data, capital needs, security, medications, and regulatory requirements stats). Ability to maintain and enhance the organizational culture during periods of constant change in healthcare. Fiscal aptitude/acumen, and computer skills required. (i.e Microsoft office platform) Experience with EHRs preferred.
