The Registered Nurse provides care to veterans in the Specialty Clinics at the Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Health Care System (OKCVAHCS). The Specialty Clinics provide service to patients with acute and/or chronic medical and surgical conditions (e.g. dermatology, wound, ENT, ortho, pain management, pulmonary, infectious disease, cardiac, GEM, neurologic and renal disorders) for the outpatient population. The specialty clinic RN provides care and counseling of persons in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider (Oklahoma Board of Nursing and/or State Licensure Board). The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient/patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). The Specialty Clinic Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients and families in the Specialty Clinic (outpatient) setting. The RN is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. The Specialty Clinic Staff Nurse demonstrates leadership when providing and improving patient care in this specialized outpatient setting.
