GI/GU surgery is nationally ranked in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals survey. We provide comprehensive care, utilizing both surgical and nonoperative techniques, to patients with a variety of diseases affecting the colon, rectal and genitourological systems. We work with a multidisciplinary team to provide excellent care to patients who have undergone major surgeries including cystectomy, complex colon and rectal procedures, and reconstructive surgeries to ensure patients can maintain a normal life. Our surgeons are leading the way in refining surgical procedures to reduce pain, complications and improve outcomes. Our patient population provides many learning opportunities for the nursing staff as well as the opportunity to provide patient and family education. We initiate state-of-the-art programs, such as enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, which have improved patient outcomes and shortened length of stay.
As a nurse in our area you will have many learning opportunities. We provide Surgical Services specialty orientation, which allows you to sharpen skills you may or may not have had the opportunity to use, and you will learn how to draw ABGs and become Port/lVAD trained. You will spend time with a Wound/ Ostomy nurse to become more proficient in complex wounds and care of ostomies. As you advance in your career, you will have many opportunities to increase your learning by attending training for ACLS, Preceptor and Charge Nurse roles. We encourage you to become more involved by joining committees that are unit based and/or hospital based.

GI/GU Service is consistently ranked in the top 20 in the nation by U.S. News & World Reports. We care for a diverse population of patients needing colorectal and urology surgery. We are leaders in providing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) care. Our surgeons are leading the way in refining surgical procedures and non-operative techniques, to reduce pain, complications, and to improve outcomes. We are a 38 bed surgical unit with a goal of providing excellent care to all of our patients. Our average nurse to patient ratio is 1:4. We offer a knowledgeable staff willing to assist you with your learning process during orientation and beyond, and a learning environment to help you grow in knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.
Responsibilities
Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate patient's physical, psychosocial and emotional needs.
Develops and implements individual plans of care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care.
Evaluates patient's response and modifies plan of care accordingly throughout the patient's stay.
Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
